J Mascis and company back at it again
After breaking up in 1997, Dinosaur Jr came back in 2005 with the album Beyond which truly showed these guys stil have a lot of great music in them and to further cement that notion the newly released Farm album is another outstanding release. This rock album is the best I have heard this year. The guitars are crunching and clean all at once with the signature melodic solos performed by Mascis intertwined perfectly throughout the album. From the first track titled "Pieces" it gets you going and keeps you interested all the way through with some great numbers like "I Want You To Know" and "Over It." After I listened to Farm a few times I started going through and looking up some details on what these guys have been up to the last few years and I found myself laughing to myself to see some pictures of them now or at least recently. A little bit out of shape and grayer hair then I remember (something many of us from that era I am sure can relate to) but you can rest assured this hasn't slowed them down one bit. Guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph were the band's original members and it is great to hear them all together again. Though often considered an alternative rock band, their unique blend of classic rock and punk rock influence has put them in a category all by themselves and when you hear Farm it will remind you exactly of why they belong there.
